Our interview with Tamara….
Wedding Date: April 12th 2014
Venue: The Sea Ranch Lodge, Sea Ranch, California
Number of Guests: 35
How it all began: We met at the Aspen Jazz Festival. Josh was living in NYC and I was living in CA with my two children, Conor -12 years old and Allie -10 years old. Josh came to visit me two weeks after we met. I was still uncertain about being in a relationship. Yet, after almost a full day of golf, I realised on the 14th hole what a special person he was and we didn’t want to let each other go. We had a long distance relationship and then Josh moved to California with the kids and I a year prior to our wedding.
Our engagement story: Josh had come for a visit to see the kids and I. It was a Friday and I was working from home with back to back conference calls all morning. Josh worked with the kids to create a scavenger hunt that included clues throughout the house. Each clue was designed around things the four of us had done as a family…a trip to Tahoe, baseball game, surf trip to Mexico. The final clue was leading me to a family tree that my daughter had done for school where Josh was referenced as “Mommy’s boyfriend”. They crossed it out and put “fiancé”. He then proposed to me in front of the kids.
Flowers: The flowers were arranged by Garden by The Sea. I wanted to keep the flowers simple with white or natural colours including tulips, roses, succulents and moss. I was very pleased with how they turned out.
Favours: We gave our quests seeded paper to be planted and “Spread the Love”. I ordered them from The Knot.
Cake: We had amazing cupcakes by Franny’s Cup & Saucer.
Food & Beverage: Simple buffet from the restaurant at the Lodge. My friend owns Vintage Berkeley Wines in Berkeley, CA so he was kind enough to bring up our favourite wines for the event.
Photographer: Bryan and Vita Hewitt Photography
Hair & Makeup: My babysitter helped curl my hair and helped with my eye make up.
Event Styling: Terry Johnson at The Sea Ranch Lodge
Where did you get inspiration from for your wedding? I had taken Josh for his birthday to Sea Ranch and we decide that the venue suited our personalities. We love nature, hiking, the ocean and mid century modern design which is what the town of Sea Ranch represents. Also through magazines and Pinterest. We wanted to keep everything simple and let the environment speak for itself. White or natural coloured flowers. I really loved the idea of balls hanging from the side of the barn. Our florist did a great job at creating that vision.
Honeymoon details: We stayed at El Secreto in Amergris Cay in Belize. It was very romantic and secluded. We took day trips of snorkelling, spear fishing, water safaris and spent the rest of the time on the beach, playing backgammon by the pool and just enjoying our love and seclusion.
What was your most memorable moment? My son walking me down the aisle and all of the sweet conversation we shared then him presenting my hand to Josh. Our wedding vows and when Josh discussed becoming the kids stepfather…everyone burst into tears of joy. Mine and Josh’s first dance. We were both so present and felt like no one else was in the room. My daughter and her friend singing at the reception and of course, sharing it all with those closest to us. Ok….that was more than oneJ
What is your tip of advice for future brides? To relax and enjoy the moment. Don’t lose sight (even for a second) that it is about your union. Although you are hosting an event, all that matters is the commitment you are making. Relish in the love that those attending are sharing and feeling along with you.
Anything else you would like to add? You’ll notice in the pictures that I was wearing a coat for some of them. The wind really picked up at the last minute and it got very cold. My friend Rachel gave me her coat and it really added sophistication to some of the shots. It was a simple old navy wool coat.
What they wore….
The Dresses: I wore the Antonia dress and Pia Head Tie from Grace Loves Lace. I added some real flowers to the headpiece and I loved the fit of the dress and how comfortable yet sophisticated and sexy I felt. Everyone commented on how the dress was my exact style. It was just a natural fit on many levels!
What shoes did you wear? Satin wedges by David Tutera
What jewellery and accessories did you wear? I kept the jewellery simple and wore my Grandmothers antique ring along with Melissa Joy Manning Recycled 14k gold/Herkimer diamond (double-terminated quartz crystal) earrings. My engagement ring was designed by my husband who works for Firestar Diamonds.
What did your Bridesmaids wear? We didn’t have bridesmaids or groomsmen. My son walked me down the aisle and my daughter was the flower girl.
