Diego + Reka in the Verdelle

A beautiful elopement set in the mountains of Hawaii, featuring our one-of-a-kind Verdelle gown.

GLL: Congratulations on your recent wedding, you looked stunning! Tell us how and why you chose your GLL gown?

I remember scrolling through the GLL website and I immediately noticed the Verdelle gown, but initially I didn’t consider it, because I thought its too risky and bold. I really wanted something that would cover my arms, so I was deciding between Inca or Francis, but I figured it will look funny to be so covered up on a tropical island. When I sent the picture of Verdelle to my friends and family, the immediate reaction was it is so you! And it really was so me, hippy and bohemian just as they know me, it was the perfect dress for me. It had those beautiful lace wings that covered my arms but still looked and felt summery, breezy, the dress was extremely comfortable, easy to slip into on the top of the mountain after hiking 20 minutes, just perfect for a destination wedding.

GLL: So tell us, how did you both meet?

It is a very complicated and soap opera like story so I will try to wrap it in a nutshell. Diego was visiting a friend in Bratislava I knew as well. It was a cold and windy October evening, I didn’t have much mood to go out but my girlfriends dragged me out for a few drinks with the usual excuse of Friday night. He walked in, introduced himself and sat at the table next to me …next thing I know we started to speak, and we just couldn’t stop until it was 8 in the morning. All of our friends were annoyed with us, that we don’t pay attention to no one, completely locking out every person, just me and him existed. That Sunday he flew back to Milan, after landing he called me and confessed he bought a flight ticket to Bratislava for the next weekend, that he wanted to see me again…I thought he was crazy, but I went with the flow and we were already in love through messages and phone calls when next Friday came. We had a wonderful weekend, he bought me a flight ticket for the following weekend to Milan and our flying back and forth begun for 8 months…we didn’t miss even one weekend, it was just magical, the waiting to see each other, to be together, the anticipation, the sad teary Sundays. Being apart so many times at the beginning made us appreciate more our time together and cherish each other. The flying up and down was obviously very tiring so after 8 months we decided one of us should move so I came to Italy, it was almost 8 years ago this October that we met…

GLL: Was it love at first sight or was it a slow burn kinda situation?

Kinda…but it escalated very quickly.

GLL: What first attracted you to your partner?

That he sat alone at a table and didn’t join our company by the table…I was thinking: What is wrong with that guy? As he says, it was all a plan to catch my attention, very clever. We started to speak and couldn’t stop…there was something about him, he was extremely funny, clever and a gentleman. I remember walking back to the apartment with our friends in the morning, we couldn’t stop laughing, I remember him saying in Italian that he adores this girl (obviously me) and eye rolling of everybody how silly we acted.

GLL: And the proposal? How did that go down?

It happened on my 30th birthday back home at my parent’s house. We were home for the holidays, and Diego knows how much I love Christmas, so he proposed on the 28th midnight when we were just chilling by the Christmas tree, it was very intimate, simple and sweet.

GLL: How did you feel on your day and how did you style your GLL look?

Frankly, I got the flu a day before our wedding so I was feeling quite sick that day as my usual luck. But obviously I was very nervous, in a good way…filled with anticipation.

GLL: Where did you get inspiration from for your wedding?

I was browsing pinterest for ideas…we decided we wanted to get married on Hawaii when we first visited Oahu in 2014. We wanted a breathtaking background and the mountains on Hawaii were just perfect for our dream wedding.

GLL: Describe your wedding in 3 words…

Best Location Ever. Joking…intimate, unique, dreamcometrue.

GLL: What was your most memorable moment?

Arriving to the Kalalau lookout point with Tyson, Julie and Diego… seeing completely nothing…it was like being in a glass of milk, the whole valley was filled with clouds. The first panic hit in but Julie explained its normal that the valley gets filled in with clouds, it’s a circle of 20-30 minutes. We hiked down to our ceremony spot and the moment we arrived to that grassy field the clouds started to lift up and we had our first peek of the mountains…Tyson was just stunned, we as well…definitely the most beautiful place we have ever seen with its huge abyss under us and the ocean…something out of this world.

GLL: What was your wedding song / playlist?

We had none actually, but we listened to Paolo Nutini all the time…

GLL: And where are you honeymooning?

This was our honeymoon/wedding voyage. We flew to California, made a road trip in northern Cali (Monterey, San Luis Obisbo, Morro Bay, Sequoia, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe), flew to Oahu, Kauai where we got married, then Maui and at the end we flew back to California where we drove up north to the breathtaking Mendocino, the Redwoods, Napa and finally San Francisco. When we landed in Milan, instead of driving home we extended our honeymoon and drove to Verona to see Adele perform her concert in the Arena of Verona.

GLL: What did you find the easiest and hardest thing about planning a wedding?

The easiest was probably to settle the paperwork in the US, find an officiant. And the hardest definitely the deciding, all that was on my shoulders and I am very dubious and I cannot decide, but at the end all your choices come down to your initial likes. I could have saved a lot of time just booking everything at the beginning without the additional searching what if I find something better….

Also just remember to go with the flow. We wanted to have a wedding on the Na Pali hiking trail. After arriving to Kauai and speaking with the locals, all of them said the idea is not the best as the trail was that time very slippery and muddy. Two days before the wedding we decided to drive around the island to check out some places, we ended up at the Waimeia Canyon what was beautiful but something was missing, before driving back home we decided to drive further up the hill…the rest is history. Kalalau lookout point was just the most stunning place we have ever seen…

GLL: Any top tips or advice you can give fellow GLL brides (beauty, health & wellness, planning etc)?

My biggest tip would be for anybody who is opting for a destination wedding: Plan your wedding day for the first days, it is a big thing and even if you don’t want to admit, it will create stress for both of you. Not just the importance of this big step but worries if everything will go right that day, how will be the weather etc. We enjoyed our trip so much more after our wedding. Don’t stress too much about the details and choices…at the end of the day everything will turn out as it should be anyway!

GLL: Describe your GLL experience…

From the beginning to the end I had one of the most beautiful experience with a brand. The GLL team is extremely helpful and very kind. The whole process was awesome; they were also super fast shipping the dress that came in the most beautiful box. The dress itself was very lightweight, perfect for traveling, very comfortable, stunning and just breathtaking. More beautiful then I expected! I wanted to sell the dress after my wedding, but I am definitely keeping it…also we are having a dinner to celebrate our nuptials with friends and family in Hungary and I am definitely wearing the dress, cannot wait!

GLL: What does marriage mean to you?

To go through this life with a person you love the most. To collect memories and moments together that you will remember forever. To have that feeling inside your heart, that you are home, that coziness but not to forget that marriage needs constant attention and care to keep the fire burning.
