How did you decide on your GLL gown and accessories?
I attended the London concierge event last year and left there smitten with two Grace Loves Lace gowns. With no hope of being able to make my mind up alone, I wrote down all the wedding adjectives I could think of on a piece of paper and had Lars pick the ones he thought best described what our wedding was going to be. He picked ‘romantic’ and ‘simple’ and without him even knowing it, he had picked the Genevieve. That was that!
Describe your look in three words…
Romantic. Effortless. With a bit of edge.
How did he propose?
We’re both hopeless romantics & the proposal was simple, personal and the best reflection of us. After a trip halfway around the world to get his hands on the perfect, most dainty ring, he couldn’t contain his excitement and popped the question on the first night of a family trip into the Kruger National Park. We were alone under the stars and his words were so beautiful he had me speechless for an hour after (seriously, I couldn’t speak for a whole hour!!) Eventually, I managed an “Of course!”
What was your goal for your wedding / what was the most important aspect to you?
Cliche, totally, but we wanted our day to feel like ours! We wanted people to leave saying “wow, that was a party”, but not just any party, We wanted tham to leaving saying “wow, that was a Nat’s and Lars’ party.” So, the ceremony was our first love child and an afternoon rave was child number two! We threw our hearts into writing our ceremony script ourselves, had one of our most dear friends as the officiant and made sure to include our friends and family throughout. And in much the same way we decided to break the wedding structure norms and had another of our closest friends who’s a DJ in Switzerland play a live set straight after the ceremony. We opened the dance floor straight away and had all 120 guests (grannies included) tapping their feet to a bit of German Techno.
The funniest moments on the day were…
The day wasn’t short of laughs and my girls in particular brought me my biggest giggles. Their creativity and comedic relief came out together when we realized no-one had plasters and ended up using a panty-liner to save my big toes from blisters before the walk down the aisle. As crafty (and successful) as it was, getting barefoot on the dance floor later got slightly awkward.
What was the most stressful part to planning?
The most stressful part of planning, beside Lars boy’s throwing him a surprise ‘lets go bungy jumping’ bachelor party 2 days before the wedding, was definitely planning the wedding from so far away. With us living in Switzerland and the wedding being in South Africa it wasn’t always easy communicating what we wanted with our vendors. But thank goodness for Skype and a very hands-on mother, we got it done and were over the moon with the results.
Any top beauty/health/fitness or wedding preparation advice that you can share…
I am all about natural beauty. I wanted to look like myself on my wedding day and didn’t go crazy with any new fitness routines or weird diets. What we did do two days before the wedding (straight from his bachelor party), Lars and I went to get our nails done together and it was one of the highlights leading up to the day. A six foot tall, deep voiced German sitting in the local salon got us a fair bit of attention and, shhh, don’t tell him I said this, but he enjoyed it even more than I did! Ladies, if you can convince your grooms to do this with you, I’d totally recommend it. It’s a good laugh and gives you a quiet moment together before the big day.
A GLL woman is to you…
Unapologetically herself. Effortlessly elegant. A wild beauty.
Any last advice or words of wisdom that you can share…
I wish someone had said this to me before I started planning so I’m just going to put it out there – Forget about a wedding planner. You don’t need one. You’re strong and capable and no one knows what you want better than you! Besides that, go big, it only happens once, and do it with all your heart and because when else will you get the chance to work on such a big project with all your most favourite humans? It’s over way too quickly, So, soak it all up.
