How did you meet / How did it all begin? Stu and I met when we were both teenagers in highschool, often appearing at the same social events. However, we didn’t officially meet until years later through a mutual friend. At that time, we became good friends, neither of us aware (despite all of our friends having an idea) of the romantic connection that was steadily growing and building with our friendship.
Tell us a little bit about your engagement story? Stu and I both share a love for travelling, in the short 8 months that we had been dating we had been to New York with friends and then we were off to Cuba on our first alone vacation as a couple. We had talked about marriage before, but on the plane to Cuba Stu had decided in his mind that he was going to propose while we were on vacation. While I was exploring the hotel and pool, Stu sneaked off to the gift shop and bought a silver ring. Later that evening after dinner on our first night in Varadero, Cuba, Stu asked if I wanted to go for a walk on the beach. We got down to the beach, to find that we were the only ones there, took off our sandals and about 10 paces into our walk, Stu got down on one knee and proposed with the gift shop ring he bought earlier that day. I was so surprised that after the whole speech and saying “Yes”, I actually asked him to ask me to marry him all over again so that I could remember it! We spent the rest of our week long vacation in complete engagement bliss.

Where did you get inspiration from for your wedding? Stu and I were very relaxed when it came to wedding planning. Luckily, we had our amazing event planner, Denise, to guide us with the process and bring our vision to life – it was truly beyond what I could have even imagined. The majority of our original inspiration came from our annual trips to Maui. I fell absolutely in love with the stress free, laid back vibe of the island, which made it an easy decision to get married on Maui where we could have a relaxed, intimate beach wedding. The gorgeous setting of Sugar Beach Events was the foundation of our inspiration; with the beach and palm trees we envisioned an outdoor wedding, with ocean colours, a rustic feel, and romantic details. The most important aspect to it all for us was that everyone was stress free, comfortable and happy – barefeet were highly encouraged!
Feature wedding song/playlist? Our wedding song we danced to under the stars was: Love is a Verb by John Mayer. The dance party continued inside with music ranging from ACDC to Beyonce, and we even had a song played by the groom himself and his old band which was unplanned but such a great surprise and so much fun!
Honeymoon details: African safari! We visited the beautiful countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe, where we did both open drive and walking safaris, as well as visiting the stunning Victoria Falls. We were completely enthralled by the amazing wildlife, my favourite being the leopards! We loved it so much that we are returning in 2016 for honeymoon round 2!
What was your most memorable moment? I have two top memorable moments! Walking down the aisle towards Stu, with our Hawaiian musician playing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” on the ukulele and whisking off down to the beach right before our outdoor dinner to share a few moments together as the sun was setting.
What is your tip of advice for future brides? To try and take in all the moments of the wedding day and enjoy every second of it because it really does fly by!
Anything else you would like to add? We were so lucky and grateful that our close family friend travelled from Vancouver, Canada where we live, to Maui to conduct the ceremony and marry us. She incorporated a traditional lei exchange into the ceremony and when we exchanged rings she spoke beautiful words about Stu’s father, who could not be with us but whose wedding ring was passed down to Stu as a beautiful memory of his Dad.
